Visited by U.S. presidents, traded for a farm, home to a railroad company’s offices, site of a grand dance hall and base for regular Lowell Thomas broadcasts, the Green Mountain Inn has a rich and storied history. Their Main Inn, Old Depot buildings and Sanborn House are listed as Numbers 13, 14 and 105, respectively, on the National Register of Historic Placeand they’ve played host to countless notable guests over the years including President Chester A. Arthur and Gerald Ford (he came out for an assignment as a model for a Look Magazine photo spread with a girl who was not named Betty).
The Inn has historic apartments that are perfect for group getaways, only six miles from the slopes but right in the heart of all of the action. Each apartment offers a premier village location adjacent to the Inn and the popular shops of Main Street, along with the essentials of a fully-equipped apartment….like a washer, dryer and fireside Jacuzzi to sink into. The Inn also added the luxurious Stowe Village Massage spa on premises where Echo works her magic into your sore and weary muscles.
While Stowe was gaining its footing as a town in the 17th century, the natural geography of the craggy pass between Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak was developing its’ own infamous history. The Notch’s huge boulders, small caves and narrow passageway proved a notorious hiding place during Jefferson’s trade embargo with Canada in 1808, during the War of 1812 and during Prohibition in the 1920s. Smuggler’s Notch is now a ‘hidden’ ski resort right outside of Stowe, a five star mountain that the locals go to when Stowe Mountain Resort is filled with out-of-towners and extra-long lift lines. No gondola, but no crowds and an abundance of pure wilderness. Worth it.

To make a stay at the Green Mountain Inn perfect, you’ll have to walk downstairs to the famous Whip & Bar Grill. The Whip has a long history as a popular gathering place and proud owner’s of Stowe’s first liquor license. Now Chef Cody Vasek is kicking it up a notch and putting fresh spins on old favorites as the brand new incredibly talented head chef. Looking for a ‘less corporate’ cooking lifestyle, Cody left the reclusive kitchens of Stowe Mountain Lodge and is interpreting the Inn’s trademark comfort food with a modern, innovative edge.
Set aside a couple of hours for one of the most sumptuous dinners you’ll ever enjoy. Start your evening with the roast quail salad (complete with sunny side quail egg), move on to Cody’s spectacular braised veal cheeks with celeriac-apple puree and jalapeno-celery salad and end with the Inn’s signature Sac D’Bon Bon for two. It will be everything you’ve anticipated and more.
